The Complete Works of Florence Scovel Shinn (book)

In the early 20th century, a group of illuminated thinkers blended together the mysticism of various religious traditions with ancient philosophies, encouraged by findings from modern science. While each thinker is unique, they tend to be grouped together under the banner of 'New Thought'. The New Thought masters include Neville Goddard, Florence Scovel Shinn, and Thomas Henry Hamblin. The key idea to emerge from this spiritual cocktail was that human growth includes a greater understanding and use of the unseen forces of the mind, such as the Law of Attraction, and that insight into these unseen laws is as important as an awareness of the physical laws of nature.

According to this tradition, one can develop one's spiritual faculties via meditation, the use of affirmations, and visualisation exercises, based on the core belief that ultimately reality is the manifestation of a divine, infinite intelligence. As the Bible alongside other ancient texts say we are made in the image of God and this infinite power (whatever name we choose to give it) is all around us and works through us. Like God, we are capable of manifesting reality through thought, because our true nature is pure consciousness and physical reality is an expression of consciousness (not the other way around). Human consciousness is at its deepest level a spiritual, energetic force, which is at its most fundamental state a manifestation emerging from the mind of God.

New Thought authors such as Florence Scovel Shinn encourage us to tell ourselves daily what we want to be, both out loud and within our minds; for example:

"I call on the law of forgiveness. I am free from mistakes and the consequences of mistakes. I am under grace and not under karmic law."

- Excerpt from "Your Word is Your Wand" by Florence Scovel Shinn -

New Thought emphasised that what we impress upon our subconscious mind manifests in reality, not what we pay lip service to with our conscious mind. In more recent times, youtubers such as Nevillution have applied the New Thought methods with video and audio techniques to enhance the message delivery to the subconscious mind. These techniques were perfected by the Munroe Institute and can be accessed via their Expand app.

Such practice offers the possibility of personal growth and power. Often an interest in these ideas arise in a person's life as a type of calling -  particularly when in a time of crisis. The biography of some of the New Thought thinkers themselves are fascinating to follow, as they were the generation that grew up through the Great Depression and achieved the American dream, 'making it' from rags to riches. According to all New Thought teachers, benefiting from these techniques requires one to have faith in the process, otherwise the doubt will block both the manifestation and the enthusiasm to practice. Regardless of one's personal belief in the magical path, Florence Scovel Shinn is a lovely entrance into New Thought, offering a calming and positive influence.
